There are five local events and festivals celebrated in Koh Chang.
Yutthanavi Memorial Day takes place in Laem Ngop, usually on the second or third week of January, to commemorate the bravery of Thailand’s Royal Navy against the French at Koh Chang waters.
Trat Independence Day commemorates the sign of treaty between King Rama V and the French in 1906. Trat Province, where Koh Chang is included is liberated exchange of many areas on the east of Mekong (today’s Cambodia).
Songkran is the New Year’s day when everybody gets wet. People throw water at passersby as good luck and prosperity and visiting the temples to pray and give donations to the monks (these holy men are considered the living Buddha). The day normally take held in mid April.
Loy Krathong, the festival of lights held in November during full moon. People gather on near the streams or river giving thanks to the goddess of water by release some Krathongs (decorated lotus-shaped vessels with lit candles).
Trat Fruit Fair is basically an agricultural exhibition that feature contest of the province’s prized fruit called Salak (snake fruit).
