The villagers at Kai Bae were the first ones who welcomed backpackers when the first arrived in Koh Chang, now the locals who rented spare rooms to those tourists are now own resorts.
The Thai fishermen living in Koh Chang are descendants of Chinese Immigrants who drifted off Southern part of China and arrived one day in an inhabited island and decided to life there. Then in mid 1980s, when electricity for the entire island was still generated by two old generators, western backpackers arrived, looking some place to sleep. The families living in the beach lend their room for free or charged those tourists 20 Baht per night. From then on the rest is history.
Kai Bae’s atmosphere is more relaxed compared to White Sand Beach but not as modest as the Lonely Beach.
Restaurants, Internet Café, mini markets and bars are not so difficult to find in KB Beach.
